* An Enrolled agent is a Tax Professional, who has earned the privilege of practicing, that is representing taxpayers before the IRS. Enrolled agents, like attorneys and certified public accountants (CPA s) are unrestricted as to which taxpayers they can represent, what types of tax matters they can handle and which IRS offices they can practice.
An individual can become an enrolled agent through past IRS employment experience at least five (5) years, or by demonstrating special competence in tax matters by passing the Special Enrollment Examination and a special IRS background check.
According to the latest government statistics, to date there are 48,000 (forty eight thousand) Enrolled Agents actively practicing before the IRS, in the US.
