* An Enrolled agent is a Federally authorized Tax Practitioner empowered by the U.S. Department of Treasury, who has earned the privilege of practicing, that is representing taxpayers before the IRS.
Enrolled Agent Status is the highest credential that can be awarded by the IRS. The Enrolled Agent credential is recognized in all 50 U.S. States. Attorney's and CPA's are recognized on a State by State basis only.
Enrolled agents, like attorneys and accountants (CPA s) are unrestricted as to which taxpayers they can represent, what types of tax matters they can handle and which IRS offices they can practice.
An individual can become an enrolled agent through past IRS experience at least five (5) years in a position which regularly engaged in applying and interpreting the provisions of the Internal Revenue Service Code and the regulations relating to income, estate, gift, employment, or excise taxes. or by demonstrating special competence in tax matters by passing the Special Enrollment Examination and a special IRS background check. According to the laTtest government statistics, to date there are 51,000 (fifty one thousand) Enrolled Agents actively practicing before the IRS, in the US and worldwide for Expatriates.
